Sat. Evening Post, 1/1/11, New Year's Edition

Once again, this has been a busy week, full of visits and even some time for play!

You're never too old to build a snowman

Coffee and cards with my best friend, Tapley, before she and Matt flew back to Houston. The next time that I see her in person there will be a little Whaley along!

A get together of some of the first group of teenagers that grew up in GBC. Actually, there is a 10 year age range here, so this group encompasses the first three groups of teens. Half of this group is 4-5 yrs. older than me, so we didn't become friends until we were adults.

It was great getting to visit with Laura Sawyer, a friend from childhood. She and her family(husband and four daughters) serve as missionaries in Maasai Mara, Kenya and are home on furlough.

I also really enjoyed spending a couple of hours with two of my former viola students and getting to catch up a little on their lives. Laura was my very first student upon graduating from the NC School of the Arts(UNCSA). She did her undergrad. at UNCG and is now doing her grad. work at my alma mater. Matt did his undergrad. at UNCSA, as well, and is now doing his grad. work at UK.

New Year's is the biggest holiday in Russian speaking countries(at least it is in Russia and Ukraine). Most celebrations require extensive planning for games, skits, costumes, fireworks, songs, etc., etc. So it is with shame that I tell you that I did absolutely nothing.....and was happy to do so. Is this a sign of growing older?? I was so tired from all of the socializing of the past three weeks that I just didn't care about trying to do anything else. I had a nice quiet evening here at home and got plenty of sleep, waking up briefly at midnight to listen to the fireworks, before dozing off again.

A New Year's tradition that my mother does. Supposedly the greens represent money and the black eyed peas represent coins, though I'm not sure where those beliefs came from. The cornbread is just a good compliment to the beans and greens. =-)

Great post, but the black eyed peas look a little pale in the picture! This is an old Southern tradition. But, the REAL way it's done is with Black eyed peas, hog jowls and collard greens!! Mine, this year, was the Southern Living Magazine version! (And, I think it was much yummier!)

I didn't know that you got together with all of those people who used to go to GBC! That's a huge God thing to have you guys all in the same place at the same time. Awesome!
