Relax and Breathe in

Following IM staff conference, I spent three days in Krakow. One day was spent with Will and Phyllis and another with an IM colleague, who took me to Auschwitz and Birkanau(I'll write about that tomorrow). In between I just wandered around the Old Town section of Krakow. The apartment I rented was right outside of the Old City walls- an incredible location. I love old buildings and cathedrals and had a thoroughly relaxing time walking down those historic streets.

The Twelve Apostles

In the city square. The cathedral with two towers is famous for its trumpeters. A trumpeter plays every hour on the hour at all four corners of the top of the left tower. Historically, the trumpeter would receive a warning from the guards of the city gate. He would then sound the warning to everyone inside the city walls.

The beautiful buildings of the Old City. One of them contains a restaurant that was started in 1354. A funny story: The first night that I got there, I was there with several IM colleagues. One, who lives in Krakow, was showing us around and said, "I have a trivia question for you. There is a very old restaurant here. If you can guess the year it was opened, you'll get a prize." I happened to be facing a restaurant at that moment and right under the name it said 1354. So I said, "1354." The look of astonishment on her face was highly amusing. It turns out that no one in the history of her tour giving has ever made that deduction before. =-D
